Mopping Up With Microfiber
Mopping Up With Microfiber
For many businesses, hiring a commercial cleaning company means that the cleaning is done better, faster, in “off-work” hours and that they benefit from the work of high quality staff, equipment and products making this a good investment for the business not merely another expense.
LET’S TALK ABOUT MICROFIBER
Why? Read on!
WHAT IS MICROFIBER?
Microfibers are densely constructed polyester and polyamide (nylon) fibres that are very thin (approximately 1/16 the thickness of a human hair). When woven together they create a net-like surface area covered with millions of spaces to trap moisture, dirt and debris.
Microfiber is durable, having a lifespan of 150 to 200 washes, much longer than the 15 to 30 washes from a cotton mop.
Microfiber has a much greater density than cotton allowing the mop to hold six times its’ weight in water and to go 400-500 square feet at a time versus 100 square feet for a cotton mop.
Microfiber is much lighter in weight which means over a course of several hours, much more flooring will be mopped. Typically a wet 24 oz. mop weighs 4.5 lbs. A Microfiber wet mop with handle comes in at 2.4 lbs.
Microfiber is environmentally friendly. It helps protect the environment by reducing the contribution of those who use it to the waste stream as well as contributing a reduction in the use of water and harmful chemicals. Typically Microfiber mops use 10 to 20 times less liquid than standard cotton mops and very few applications of Microfiber mops require the use of chemicals at all.
THE NEED FOR SPEED
CLEAN 50% FASTER WITH MICROFIBER
An 18″ Microfiber flat mop will take 4 minutes to clean 1000 sq.ft and will clean 10,000 sq.ft per hour .
A 24 oz. Mop head w/bucket wringer will take 12 minutes to clean 1000 sq. ft and will clean 5,000 sq.ft. per hour.
A 32 oz. Mop head w/bucket wringer will take 10 minutes to clean 1000 sq. ft. and will clean 6,000 sq.ft. per hourl
There is no need to explan further, Microfiber is simply faster to work with, allowing more work to be accomplished in half the time!
TOUGH ON GERMS
Microfiber is tougher on germs and microbes. Never before has there been a time when there is so much focus on bacteria and germs. Made from synthetic materials, Microfibers trap and hold bacteria, dust and dirt within the fibres instead of just pushing them around like cotton mops do. Cotton mops, made from organic materials, tend to be a desirable home for undesirable odours and bacteria. Findings have found that Microfiber mops remove far more microbes, up to 95% versus 68% removed by a cotton string mop (*published by the American Journal of Infection Control). Healthcare facilities have been quick to embrace the use of Microfiber cleaning. They see it as an effort to reduce cross-contamination risk between patient rooms, so vital now in the age of the Covid-19 virus.
EASE OF USE
Microfiber is easy to use. In addition to the aforementioned fact that Microfiber is much lighter in weight, it is also easier to manoeuvre, to carry, to wring out, to set up and to clean in both small and large areas. These mops are able to get into tiny nooks and crevices that typically traditional cotton mops cannot.
EASY TO CLEAN AND REUSE
Microfiber mops are easy to launder after each use and typically withstand the repetition of the laundering process better than cotton mops which tend to shred and /or knot during the process shortening their shelf life.
OUR CHOICE
At Control Janitorial Inc., we use a CPI Microfiber Flat Mop system when we mop up. Their 18″ or 46 cm. looped wet mop is made of a Tri-Split (TM) Technology that prevents ballooning when in the laundering process and can hold more cleaning solution than any other Microfiber mop of its’ size. Its’ pocket backing keeps it snug on the frame and allows it to be a non-touch system. The mesh backing provides a quick distribution of solution when pre-treated and launders so much easier. The colour coding dramatically decreases the chances of cross contamination. Also it is guaranteed to survive 1000 wash cycles and is double stretched throughout for increased durability.

MAKING THE INVESTMENT
Microfiber mops require a higher upfront cost of up to three times the cost of a cotton mop head however taken into consideration that they last longer, stand up to more frequent washing and maintain their effectiveness much longer, the Microfiber mop will offer an ROI within the first 150 washings. Also taken into account the fact that the Microfiber mop is much kinder on the staff who use them and could well reduce the risk of worker injury.
Control Janitorial Inc. has invested years in making our business the best it can be; constantly learning and growing and investing in new technologies to improve what we do for our clients. The use of Microfiber products is just one of the ways in which we have improved ourselves.
No product is perfect for every situation. It is important to know what type of flooring you are cleaning and in some cases, for example if the floor is greasy then Microfiber is not desirable. By and large though in most situations as indicated in this blog the Microfiber mop is an excellent choice.
